Bog Spider – What is a Bog Spider?

The Bog spider is a small spider found in raised bogs. These are the rarest spiders in Britain. There are a wide variety of species of spiders present. However, this is the only spider that jumps 50 times its height.

It is also known as a jumping spider, as it can leap from a far distance to grab its prey. These spiders also have good vision, which helps them sight their target from a distance.

What is a Bog Spider?

The full name of this spider is the bog sun-jumper spider, and its Latin name is heliophanus dampfi. It is black, the palps are lime green, and its legs are brown. Papls are their reproductive organ through which the male transfers sperms to the female spiders.

These appear like boxing gloves, and male spiders have larger palps than females. They are small as they are only 3 mm in size, and their life is only six months to two years.

What if a Bog Spider Bites You?

Although it is not natural for bog or jumper spiders to bite someone until they are crushed or threatened. But their bites are not severe, and one can easily endure them as it’s less effective than a bee’s sting. However, one can face health issues if allergic to jumper spiders or venom. If you are bitten and the spider is crushed, you can take a photo for reference and consult a doctor immediately.

Preventive Measures

Wash the infected area with soap and water immediately, which will help you avoid bacterial infections. This will defend your skin against skin issues and minimize the risk of severe infection.
If there is a burning sensation on the bite site, apply a cool, wet cloth. This will cool down the infected area and prevent the symptoms of redness, discolouration, and swelling. Please ensure the cloth you are using is clean; otherwise, it increases the chances of infection.

You must apply a topical antibiotic ointment if there is a welt after the bite.

Conclusion

One can consider the above-provided preventive measure; however, one should consult a doctor. Do not tickle or try to touch the spider if you see it. If you be calm, it will not harm you; otherwise, the spider can treat you as a threat.
